The CW to Give Back Sundays to Affiliates

This is just another sign of the trainwrech The CW has become. For one, their flagship shows, Gossip Girls and 90210, are struggling to make it above 2 million viewers. They cater completely to one demographic (women), and isolate all their shows that don't cater to this demo. They don't program Saturdays, and they've pretty much given up Fridays. Repeats are airing in prime slots. And now this.

After a disaster plan this season, The CW has now decided to give up Sunday nights entirely. At the beginning of the season, they tried sharing the block with Media Rights Capital (MRC), airing original dramas like Valentine and Easy Money. Well, those failed immensely, and The CW is now programming the network with repeats of The Drew Carey Show at 6pm, repeats of Jericho at 7pm, with a movie airing at 8pm. And all are bringing down the lineup, as they say.

The movie usually does okay with total viewers, usually with 1-1.5 million viewers, but the demos are terrible. Jericho has done only half of that in repeats, and no one knows how Drew Carey has been doing (although I watch it myself).

The CW has stated that in doing this, the night will go back entirely to affiliates. With no luck on the night, they will be focusing more on Monday-Fridays (gasp). But, let's face it - this network will not be around in 5 years. They have an average of barely 2 million viewers. Their biggest hits (Top Model, Smallville) are aging beyond their years, shows like One Tree Hill and Supernatural remain strong, but just don't qualify for status, where newcomer 90210 and sophomore Gossip Girl aren't doing anything. They have given up once good sitcoms Everybody Hates Chris and The Game to Fridays, and most likely next season, we won't see any bit of comedy on their lineup. It's sad. They try, and they try, but their network is to "inside." If you're over the age of 25, or a man, watching The CW is like breaking a law.

  1. That is so true. The WB was a great network that anyone could watch, even if you weren't in that age group. The CW is a joke of a network and it's dying. Once Smallvill and Supernatural leave, they will have nothing left.

  2. You couldn't be more right. I like The WB - they had great shows that anyone could watch. Great family dramas like Everwood and 7th Heaven, teen dramas like Dawson's Creek and the once-good One Tree Hill, and many successful sitcoms.

The CW is nothing like this. Their shows are bad, and no one cares to watch them. If they would return to a format like The WB, with shows all audiences can watch, they could be very successful. For now, they remain a disaster of a network.
