Medium Update: CBS "Blindsighted" by Cancellation

"The news wasn’t as sweet for “My Name Is Earl” and “Medium.”

“We didn’t see any letters or chatter for those shows,” Silverman said. “And we didn’t see any creative momentum.”

“Earl” and “Medium” aren’t completely dead. “Earl” producer
20th Century Fox TV is set to talk to Fox and ABC about potentially moving the laffer to those nets. And “Medium,” which comes from CBS TV Studios, looks likely to move to CBS, where it would make a logical companion to “Ghost Whisperer.”

As for
"Medium," CBS execs felt so blindsided by the move that they took the unusual step of sending out a tersely-worded statement.

"NBC’s cancellation of 'Medium' is inexplicable to us," the CBS statement read. "The ratings don’t lie: 'Medium' outperforms many of NBC’s renewed shows.... We believe the show has a significant future and await developments."

That, of course, is believed to be a thinly-veiled hint at the CBS network's acquisition of the show.

No chatter for Medium? All I've been hearing around message boards and forums on the web is people wanting to see Medium renewed. Even my poll proved it: it had 1 more vote than Law & Order to be renewed. Obviously people wanting it back.

But, the news is still good for this show. As you can probably tell, it's a person favorite of mine. I think it's the best drama currently on television. With this news, CBS will most likely pick up the show. Still, I encourage every fan to write a letter right now, and get it in the mail tomorrow. Their addresses can be found all over the web. I can also send it to you via email if you request.

UPDATE: According to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood, CBS has now picked up Medium to air with Ghost Whisperer, apparently for a full season. This would be the first full season of Medium in 3 years is true. Some behind-the-scenes stuff: NBC wanted 13 episodes, the production companies wanted 16 episodes, and Patricia Arquette wanted 22 episodes. Clearly, NBC dropped out.

  1. Medium should do very well for CBS on Fridays. I can see a seemless transition over the whole night.

  2. I have no doubt it will. The night should be very even, and hopefully Medium will end CBS' long time time 9pm problem.
